MIB recommends reduction of GST on digital news subscription from 18% to 5%

The MIB has made recommendations to the Finance Ministry to reduce the Goods & Services Tax (GST) applied on digital news subscription, as per media reports.

Online media houses have been seeking bringing down the GST from 18 per cent to 5 per cent.

The GST Council will now be meeting on September 9.

A media report quoted an official as saying that the I&B Secretary had written to the Revenue Secretary in this regard. The recommendation talks of either removing the GST or rationalising it by brining it down to 5 per cent as the same as e-books.
