Zomato bans 'misleading' AI images of food from restaurant menus

Zomato took a decisive stance against the use of AI-generated images for representing dishes on its platform when on Sunday, its founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal announced that the company will actively remove such images from restaurant menus, following a surge in customer complaints.

Goyal emphasized that while Zomato employs AI to streamline various operations, its use for dish imagery is misleading and detrimental to the consumer experience. The platform has received numerous complaints about the discrepancy between AI-generated images and the actual food served, leading to a breach of trust.

To ensure authenticity, Zomato will be implementing stricter guidelines for image uploads and will actively detect and remove AI-generated content.

Perhaps more interestingly, the company has also extended support to restaurant partners, offering assistance with professional food photography to enhance the visual appeal of their menus. This move not only underscores Zomato's “commitment to providing accurate and reliable information to its users” but could be the source of a new ‘AI-generated’ revenue stream for India’s tastiest unicorn.
