INS President Rakesh Sharma meets Finance Minister ahead of Budget 2024

Rakesh Sharma, President of the Indian Newspaper Society, on Wednesday met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to submit demands and concerns of the media industry ahead of Union Budget.

"It was a very cordial and fruitful meeting," said Sharma after the meeting.

Sitharaman had presented the Interim Budget 2024 ahead of Lok Sabha elections. The full Budget is expected to be presented on July 22.

In the Interim Budget of 2024-25, Sitaraman allocated Rs 4,342.55 crore to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), a slight decrease of approximately 7.44% from Rs 4,692 crore allocated in the previous fiscal. Prasar Bharati was allocated Rs 2509.94 crore and the Press Council of India was given Rs 15.64 crore. A total of Rs 2959.94 crore was allocated towards the development of the broadcasting sector, marking it the highest allocation within the MIB. 

In the previous fiscal, out of the Rs 4692 crore given to MIB, Rs 2808.36 crore was dedicated to Prasar Bharti and Rs 18.21 crore was given to the Press Council of India. The maximum fund allocation was towards the broadcasting segment, amounting to Rs 3348.36 crore.
